UCL Alumni Profile: Shonil Sumaria

Role: Ireland Customer Development Finance Value Partner – Finance

Studied: BSc Economics & Geography at UCL

"I joined Unilever on the UFLP Finance graduate programme in 2015, and in the short space of a year I have been exposed to many sides of the business enjoying real responsibility from day one. Having had my first placement in the Global eCommerce team and now working in a more operational role based in Dublin supporting the Ireland Customer Development teams, I have already been able to work alongside key decision makers and help influence key actions that have had real impacts at both the global and local levels. Comparing myself now to when I first started, it is very clear to see how much I have developed which is all down to the daily challenges I have to face at Unilever, ensuring that I am constantly learning and improving.

Studying Economics & Geography at UCL helped me develop the perfect mind set for working in a fast paced and volatile FMCG industry. The most important skills I have taken with me into the UFLP and continued to develop have been by organisational and priority management skills, people skills and the ability to take large volumes of complex pieces of data and information and process them into forms which are easy to comprehend and digest by a range of different stakeholders. This is an essential form of communication and one which working at a company like Unilever will really help you perfect."
